There’s no doubt about it: This is Scarlett Johansson’s year. The highest-paid actress in Hollywood for the second year running (and the highest-grossing star of the decade), she’s about to hit the awards circuit thanks to her standout turn in Marriage Story. With a Golden Globe nod already in the bag, could she be in contention for the first Oscar of her career? What we do know for sure is that, nominated or not, Johansson will be rocking the red carpet as only she can.
Scarlett’s style evolution

From her style beginnings as a gawky, grungy 90s teen (think slip dresses, neon and clumpy shoes) Scarlett Johansson took in a rebellious, mullet-haired phase in 2003 before morphing into a Hollywood siren of the old school, usually to be found swathed in curve-hugging satin and the epitome of 50s glamor in Dolce & Gabbana’s 2014 makeup campaign. This year, she’s been killing it on the promo trail, in sugar-pink custom Miu Miu pants for the Hollywood premiere of Jojo Rabbit and reinventing the rugby top at a photocall for Marriage Story in Venice.
But back to that mullet, because Johansson’s hair, currently back to a shoulder-length bob, has always marked her out as a risk-taker. You name it, she’s done it: natural waves in the 90s, blonde bombshell updos in the early aughts, plus the more recent beachy bobs and pixie crops. And quiffs, braids and edgy buzz cuts have all gotten a look-in along the way. Her one regret? That time it looked like she’d had a fight with some crimping irons.
That engagement ring…
Getting engaged for the third time? This summer, Scarlett Johansson showed us how it’s done. For her engagement to comedian Colin Jost, she opted for a diamond ring that was anything but traditional. Instead, Johansson chose a rare, light brown pear-shaped diamond weighing in at a whopping 11 carats and set on a curving black ceramic band. Vogue quickly deemed it “the most dazzling diamond in Hollywood.”

… and those tattoos
It’s not just diamonds that ScarJo likes to upsize; she’s also well known for her massive back tattoo. First revealed to the world at the 2018 Met Gala, Johansson’s oversized rose, inked across her mid-back, was the work of East Side Ink’s Josh Lord. She loved it so much that she invited her castmates to get matching geometric tattoos from Lord to commemorate the release of Avengers: Infinity War in April last year. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner and Chris Hemsworth were all happy to get involved.
Far from your typical Hollywood starlet, our Jewish fashion icon of the month has always trodden her own style path. Whatever the awards circuit brings, you can count on megawatt glamour — and possibly a few surprises — from the world’s biggest movie star.
