Jewish Fashion Icon of the Month: Timothée Chalamet

This year’s big winner was decided before the Oscar nominations had even been announced. The coveted winner of the Red Carpet Grand Slam — the starlet whose fashion choices during Award Season catapult them to a whole new level of fame — is a nice Jewish boy from New York City. Step forward, Timothée Chalamet, and feel the love.

1Gaga for Chalamet

Quite simply, the internet has gone nuts for the 23-year-old actor. Marie Claire devotes a weekly column to “This week in Timothée Chalamet.” Refinery 29 recently ran a story on Club Chalamet — an online hangout for his more mature fans.

And video footage of a young Chalamet rapping about math, of all things, recently went viral after being unearthed by the Graham Norton chat show in the UK.

2A star is born

Sure, he’s a rising star in Hollywood. He scored a Best Actor nomination at last year’s Academy Awards for his role in Call Me By Your Name; this year, he’s trotting up and down red carpets in support of his Globes and BAFTA-nominated turn in Beautiful Boy. Next up, there’s the Little Women remake, and he’s signed up for a new Wes Anderson movie too.

But the current fascination with Chalamet has little to do with his acting chops, impressive as they are. Nor is it because of his impeccable power couplings — although a high school relationship with Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon, and a rumored current romance with Lily Rose Depp, certainly add a sheen to the Chalamet mystique.

3A whole lot of couture

His secret, it seems, is a printed suit. Chalamet wore an Alexander McQueen suit embroidered with flowers in San Sebastian in September and turned to McQueen again when he sported a suit emblazoned with an oversized floral print to the UK premiere of Beautiful Boy a month later. But just when the whole splashy-prints schtick was becoming something of a signature, Chalamet went and switched it up, sporting a sparkly Louis Vuitton bib (don’t call it a harness) to the Golden Globes, and a black sweatshirt with jeans and white sneakers to the brand’s runway show at Paris Men’s Fashion Week in January.

Fashion watchers can’t get enough. Having struck up friendships with the designer likes of Louis Vuitton and Off-White’s Virgil Abloh and former Berluti designer Haider Ackermann, Chalamet has been busy gracing front rows and fashion parties, and W Magazine has declared him “Hollywood’s best-dressed man on the red carpet.”

For us though, the charm is all about young Timothée’s choice of date. Never mind his sterling work in raising the profile of men’s fashion on the red carpet; what really sealed his status as Jewish Fashion Icon was his appearance at the Golden Globes in January — accompanied by his mother.
